Millions of Americans depend on Social Security for their income because so many people can no longer rely on traditional pensions, and have been unable to save much in a 401(k) or IRA. Millions more contribute to Social Security with every paycheck, earning protection they can count on for retirement, in the event of a career-ending disability, or to support survivors. Social Security has never been a day late nor a dollar short, but given the importance of Social Security to our families, it is critical to continue to protect and strengthen it.

Representative Neal is a longtime champion of Social Security and has taken steps to protect and strengthen it, including:
Strongly opposed President Trump’s proposal to cut Social Security by $64 billion, made in his FY 2018 budget
Supports legislation to improve the Social Security COLA, boost benefits across-the-board, and ensure no one has worked for years retires into poverty
Continues to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fix the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) which impacts thousands of Massachusetts workers including teachers, police officers, firefighters, and municipal employees that deserve to have their retirement protected
Works to reduce lengthy wait times for Disability Appeals Hearings and to improve service in Social Security field offices
Helped enact legislation to strengthen the Social Security representative payee program, which helps people who lack the ability to manage their own benefits, ensuring robust oversight of a program that is critical to protecting the most vulnerable in our society
Protects Social Security benefits for our veterans, who have sacrificed for our country, because more veterans currently receive benefits from Social Security than Veterans disability or pension benefits
