Environment and Climate Change

“Lowering global carbon emissions in an effort to protect our planet for future generations should not be a partisan issue. But instead of embracing a green energy future, President Trump has chosen to isolate America from the rest of the world on a universally supported agreement to combat climate change.”

One of my priorities in Congress is keeping our environment clean and safe. That’s why I oppose President Trump’s plan to lift the offshore drilling ban and his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. Another of my priorities as Ranking Member of the Ways & Means Committee has been to promote the clean energy industry that generates renewable energy and creates thousands of jobs through manufacturing of wind turbines and solar panels. I also have worked to ensure that our nation becomes more energy efficient. These initiatives, such as smart meters and energy efficient improvements to homes, are a win-win as they not only save energy but also save money for consumers.

  • Received a perfect score in 2017 from the League of Conservation Voters on their National Environmental Scorecard

  • Opposed the Republicans’ tax bill that not only showers corporations with tax breaks while doing little for middle-class families but also maintains tax breaks for oil companies and opens up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling

  • Opposed President Trump’s reckless plan to put our pristine oceans, coastlines, wetlands, and estuaries at risk to offshore oil and gas drilling

  • Honored with the "Friend of the National Parks Award" from the nonpartisan National Park Conservation Association for his contribution to protecting and enhancing America's national parks

  • Opposed President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, which damages America’s standing and reputation around the world and puts us on the wrong side of history on one of the most important global challenges of our time

  • Helped enact tax legislation that stimulated greater investment by utility companies in smart meters, a high-tech version of your current home electricity meter

  • Led the charge in Congress on the long-term extension of tax incentives for wind energy and solar so we keep up with the rest of the world and ensure widespread deployment of renewable energy in our economy

  • Helped enact legislation that extends the home energy efficiency tax credit that would allow consumers to receive up to a $500 tax credit for purchases of energy efficient home improvements, such as roofing and windows
